Sounds just like a small uke. Cigar box has nice tone. Used a "recycled neck" from a kid's uke and the fretting is pretty tight for my fat fingers. Right now I'm looking at plans for a gourd banjo (http://thekimerers.com/brian/gourd2/index.shtml). There are all kinds of sights on the web about cigar box instruments; i.e., uke, strum stick, etc. Got my box from a cigar store for $3.00. If I looked around, I could possibly get it for free.
Le - if Brian plans to build a cigar box uke, I would suggest he build a Tenor Uke. It's larger, deeper tone, and fretted for easier play. The one I made is the smallest, or standard uke.
Some of the associated web sites also show how you can make an electric pickup from a simple piezo (sp?) speaker. Got my gourd and am shaping the neck. After cutting the gourd in half, I now have the makings of two bodies. Maybe one will have skin head for tenor banjo and the other wood (like the strum stick). Oh what fun....

Brian wants to make one of these.

That's a way cool link Pa,
You think he built that whole thing with a camera around his neck?
He actually wants to build a cigar box guitar, but I'm sure it's basically the same process. The gourd banjo looks cool, too!
