Ok, all you geeks and geetettes. I need some explanation and advice about internet telephone service. Just exactly how does it work? Are there "delays" on the phone conversations similar to voice/video conversations on msn IM? Is it as good/better/worse than traditional telephone service? Pros and cons, please. Also, comparison between dsl and cable internet service.

Don't know about internet phone. As far as DSL vs Cable at work we use both for different areas of the country. I have found that with DSL you really need to know how far away from the switch you are as this will affect the quality and speed of service. I have found that the cable is faster and more reliable when comparing equivalent speed tiers of service. However DSL is less expensive.

Your "delay" will partly depend on your connection speed. We use Vonage VOIP (voice over internet protocol) at work it's not as good as old fashion analog but there is almost no delay.
Skype has some delay.. similar to talking on a cell phone. They have hardware that allow you to use phone handsets connected to Skype.. I have heard they are pretty cool. One of the most common complaints is with VOIP.. because of it's decentralized nature, It has no 911 service. If you have a good internet connection, it's a viable solution, still not up to speed with analog phone you are used to. Compare the average VIOP call to your better cell phone calls. IMHO

Thanks for the input. It's made my decision making easier. Going to stay status quo for now. Would like the better service with cable internet but not willing to pay the extra for it at this time. Will stay with our "regular" phone service and IM. Thanks again.....
